Polytechnic Institute of Turin’s Shelters Project: Monitoring the Alps with support from Sasso

Turin Polytechnic’s Shelters – Architectures for the Alps project represents a cutting-edge initiative that combines scientific research, technological innovation and environmental sustainability. The goal is the design and construction of modular mountain refuges that can integrate harmoniously with the alpine environment and provide crucial data for monitoring climate change. In this context, Sasso Srl stands out as a key sponsor, bringing technical expertise and sustainable energy solutions.

The Shelters project is a virtuous example of how collaboration between scientific research and private enterprise

The heart of the project: the S.A.S.O. module.

The centerpiece of the initiative is the S.A.S.S.O. housing module, an acronym that encapsulates the philosophy of the project: sustainability, autonomy, safety, science and observation. This module is designed to minimize environmental impact by making maximum use of natural resources and integrating advanced environmental monitoring technologies.

Advanced instrumentation for environmental monitoring

The S.A.S.S.O. module is equipped with a set of state-of-the-art tools for scientific data collection:

Weather station: for high-precision thermometer and rainfall data collection.

Microplastics monitoring: an innovative system for the analysis of microplastics in precipitation.

Monitoring of glacial and snow masses: chambers for observation and three-dimensional modeling of glacial masses.

Permanent GNSS station: to improve the accuracy of topographic operations and monitor land movements.

Sustainable energy and the role of Sasso

Module power is provided by a photovoltaic system with lithium-iron-phosphate storage, designed to integrate seamlessly with the alpine environment. Sasso provided crucial support at this stage, bringing its expertise in the renewable energy sector to bear. Sasso’s support was crucial to the success of the project, as his technical knowledge and energy solutions made it possible to achieve the set goals.

The Shelters project is a virtuous example of how collaboration between scientific research and private enterprise can lead to concrete results in environmental protection. With the support of Sasso Srl, the Polytechnic University of Turin has been able to build a state-of-the-art infrastructure for monitoring the Alps, contributing to climate change research and the promotion of sustainable development.
